BP buys Google, Yahoo search words to keep people away from real news on Gulf oil spill disaster

In their most tenacious effort to control the ‘spin’ on the worst oil spill disaster in the history, BP has purchased top internet search engine words so they can re-direct people away from real news on the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe.

BP spokesman Toby Odone confirmed to ABC News that the oil giant had in fact bought internet search terms. So now when someone searches the words ‘oil spill’, on the internet, the top link will re-direct them to BP’s official company website.

This would not be the first time that BP has tried to control information to protect the company’s public image.

Shortly after the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20, 2010, BP executives quickly underestimated the size of the disastrous oil spill. Some suggest they did it to avoid costly EPA per-gallon spill fines. The less oil spilled, the lower the fines.

A month into the spill, the public learned through independent science, that the spill was in fact a million gallon a day gusher. BP got caught in their own lie when the used a syphon pipe in one of the broken riser pipes and proudly proclaimed that they were capturing 5,000 barrels of oil a day. With the oil obviously still gushing, they had to up their spill rate to explain the reported discrepancy in their earlier estimates.

Sounds like they've been learning their Alinsky lessons from Organizing for America, which has done precisely the same thing in the past regarding Obastard.

Big deal.

It's the top (and only) SPONSORED link, and clearly indicated as such.

It's not like they're bribing Google to hide something from you.

They're just another advertiser.

The premise of this is just plain nonsense, and they know it.

“Buying” a search term only gets you to the top of the pile; it doesn’t block the other results.

This story is misleading. They can’t alter the search results; they can only buy ads that are adjacent to the search results.

If they want to pay for that fine. I would think most oil companies would pay not to have this.

Sure they did, but I can guarantee you the BP defenders will swarm all over this thread. BP can do no wrong in the eyes of some FReepers. They remind me of the DUmmies and KOscrapheads that endlessly defend the Kenyan Marxist no matter what he does. After all, BP and the Kenyan are like 2 peas in a pod. They have lied from day one and that will soon become obvious. I don’t care how much Corexit they use, the truth will come out, they can’t hide it forever.

Correct. A search for ‘oil spill’ gets you thousands of hits with BP listed first. The rest are a multitude of other sources.

Start searching for Corexit, toxic Corexit, and BP oil spill. Spend at least an hour and tell me how many pages are no t available or noted as attack sites. Go ahead.

BP's problem is that it's a corporate outlaw that successfully bribed Obama to give it carte blanche to drill in the most dangerous possible environment with the predictable results. "Big Oil" did not do this; BP and Obama did.

I already have a link to BP. I also have a link to THE OIL DRUM. Between the two, I find the most up to date, and well-informed information.

Of course BP is going to low-ball the spill amount. They might also be exaggerating the costs (though I doubt it).

Anyone who is not capable is using their own judgment and reasoning abilities while reading ANY source of information, sorting out the wheat from the chaff, really has no good reason to debate the issue with others. However, I find that they are more abundant than those who do their best to be informed.

BP was behind schedule, and the MMS authorized waivers for costly and timely 'safety' procedures, including placing more than just one cement seal between the inner and outer casing. Not only was that a result of conflicting goals within MMS, there was political pull all the way up to the top, from those who have investments in BP.

Didn’t the Democrat party or one of its allies do something similar recently? I remember discussing it on FR, with many repeating the search over and over to drive up the cost.
